Update: New Hope Police provide detail on arrest of Lower Southampton police sergeant for alleged DUI

New Hope Free Press police carAs reported Thursday, a Lower Southampton police sergeant was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving, and failure to stop at a red signal as a result of a traffic incident on Sept. 26, the New Hope Police Department confirmed today.

In a statement Friday, the New Hope Police Department said, “On 9/26/14 at 2:16 a.m., a reportable accident occurred in New Hope Borough in the area of 44 S. Sugan Road. It was reported that an officer from the New Hope Borough Police Department had observed a Chevrolet pickup truck, traveling south on Sugan Road, going through a steady red signal located at Sugan Road and Bridge Street.”

“The officer pulled out to stop the vehicle, and noticed the tail lights of the pickup truck off the roadway,” continued the statement. “The officer then discovered a one-vehicle accident involving this Chevy pickup truck into a PECO pole. The driver was identified as Frank C. Leonhardt III,  DOB 5/16/60, of Feasterville, PA.

“It was believed he was under the influence of alcohol at this time by the responding officers. Leonhardt was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he he was treated for a head injury sustained in the crash. A blood sample was obtained from Leonhardt so that an analysis could be performed to see if he was under the influence at the time of the accident,” concluded the police statement.

Court documents indicate that New Hope Police Officer Ryan Moore was the arresting officer. A preliminary hearing has been set for Nov. 17 in front of Judge Maggie Snow.
