Area police departments and the Pennsylvania State Police have launched an enforcement effort targeting aggressive driving behaviors, PennDOT officials announced.
The enforcement blitz began Monday and will continue through Aug. 17, officials said.
The stepped up enforcement is aiming to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on roadways throughout Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.
In Central Bucks County, police departments involved include Bedminster Township, Buckingham Township, Doylestown Township, New Britain Township, New Hope Borough, Solebury Township, Warringtown Township, and Warwick Township.
More than 80 police departments in the Philadelphia region are participating in the statewide drive, officials said.
Officers and troopers will focus on a range of unsafe behaviors, including heavy truck violations, pedestrian safety infractions, red-light running, speeding and tailgating.
Drivers exhibiting other aggressive actions or driving too fast for conditions will also be cited, officials warned.
On the roads, officers and troopers will use a number of strategies, including traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrols as they work to identify and ticket aggressive drivers.
There were 1,608 aggressive driving-related crashes, resulting in 43 fatalities and 99 suspected serious injuries, according to 2024 PennDOT crash data for the five-county area.
PennDOT advises motorists who encounter an aggressive driver to:
- Get out of their way and don’t challenge them.
- Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact, and ignore rude gestures.
- Don’t block the passing lane if you drive slower than most traffic.
- Do not attempt to follow or pursue the vehicle. You or a passenger may call the police. But if you use a cell phone, pull over to a safe location.
The enforcement wave is a part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program, funded by federal dollars from the National Highway Traffic Traffic Safety Administration through PennDOT.
