Rescue crews were dispatched to the Delaware River Tuesday afternoon after reports of a kayaker in distress near the wing dam.

The City of Lambertville Fire Department said they responded to the call at 3:36 p.m.

The fire department launched an airboat from the Lambertville boat ramp.

As the airboat crew headed south to conduct a search of the river, the kayaker managed to reach safety on his own, the fire department said.

According to department officials, the person swam back to the New Jersey side of the river and walked toward the boat ramp to return to his vehicle while search efforts were underway.

All emergency units were cleared from the scene once the kayaker was confirmed to be safe.

The Lambertville Fire Department was assisted by the New Hope Eagle Fire Company, West Amwell Fire Company, and the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad.
