Retired Hunterdon County Detective John Mulligan will serve as the guest speaker at this year’s Hunterdon County 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony.

The ceremony will be held at the Hunterdon County Justice Center in Flemington on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m.

The event is open to the public and will honor those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and pay tribute to first responders, military personnel and civilians who responded to the tragedy, according to Sheriff Fred Brown.

Mulligan recently retired from the sheriff’s office after a 37-year career in law enforcement.

A nearly 35-year resident of Hunterdon County, he began his career in the U.S. Marine Corps before serving as a special agent with the FBI. His FBI assignments included posts in New York City, Newark, and several high-threat environments overseas.

Following his FBI service, Mulligan was deputy chief of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and an investigator with the Essex County and Hunterdon County prosecutors’ offices.

Mulligan has received numerous commendations, including induction into the NYPD Honor Legion, valor awards from the Jersey City Police Department and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, and the 2007 Federal Law Enforcement Investigator of the Year award. He also received the FBI Director’s Award for his service in Karachi, Pakistan.

“John Mulligan is the embodiment of public service and bravery,” Brown said. “His life’s work reflects the very values we seek to honor at our 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony — courage, sacrifice, and a commitment to protecting others. We are privileged to have him share his story and perspective with our community.”
