A suspicious package at the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office prompted an evacuation and a hazmat team response Wednesday at the busy Justice Center.
The county sheriff’s office in Doylestown Borough reported the package around 12:15 p.m. after it raised concerns among staff.
Deputies secured the area and contacted the Bucks County Special Operations Team, which deployed its hazmat unit. The Bucks County Detectives were also contacted, according to multiple sources.
Staff and visitors were cleared from the Justice Center, which was holding criminal and civil hearings at the time.
Stephen Watson, the court administrator for Bucks County, confirmed that “evacuation protocols were promptly implemented.”
Watson said the hazmat team opened and tested the package for hazardous materials.
After approximately 90 minutes, authorities gave the all-clear, and normal operations at Justice Center resumed.
“At no point was there any threat to the safety of the public or staff,” Watson said.
Multiple sources, including law enforcement officials, stated the package contained a gift card intended for deputies. One source noted the package was described in a way contributed to the initial concern.

The sheriff’s office did not comment on the incident and deferred comment to the responding agencies.
“The Court thanks all affected individuals for their patience, cooperation, and understanding. The Court further appreciates and commends the efforts of each responding agency and individual for ensuring the safety of all those visiting and working in the Justice Center,” Watson stated.
The incident is one of several suspicious packages and items that required further examination at the Justice Center and Bucks County Administration Building in recent years.
