As warmer weather arrives in Bucks County, law enforcement officials are cautioning owners of powersport vehicles to take precautions against theft.
The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office issued a warning that ATVs, motorcycles, motorized scooters, mini bikes, and dirt bikes are frequently targeted by thieves due to their ease of transport compared to cars and trucks.
The U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance has indicated that vehicle theft has become a profitable enterprise for criminals, including organized groups.
Law enforcement officials highlighted that these thefts often lead to additional issues such as illegal operation on sidewalks and roadways, reckless driving, and attempts to evade police.
Investigations frequently uncover related crimes like title washing, counterfeit titles, and identity theft, authorities said.
To deter theft, the district attorney’s office advises owners to keep their powersport vehicles out of sight when stored outdoors. They recommend using physical deterrents such as chains and various locks in conjunction with a floor anchor. When possible, storing these vehicles in a secure, locked shed or garage is strongly encouraged.
Owners should also consider installing tracking devices or kill switches to aid in recovery and disablement.
Documenting serial or VIN numbers and taking photographs of the vehicles can be crucial for reporting thefts and insurance claims, officials said.
A fundamental piece of advice from law enforcement is to never leave keys with the vehicle.
“Don’t let a crook steal your fun!” the district attorney’s office stated in its warning.
