West Ferry Street in New Hope closed as firefighters respond to gas leak

West Ferry Street between West Bridge Street and Stockton Avenue in New Hope was closed to traffic and residents evacuated Wednesday as firefighters responded to a gas leak near the corner of Old Mill Road.

Members of New Hope Eagle Volunteer Fire Company arrived on scene at 11:41 a.m., and were joined by Midway Fire Company and Lambertville Fire Department.

New Hope police went door to door on West Ferry Street, advising residents to evacuate their homes. Many gathered in or near Lenape Park, also known locally as “Kaboom Park” for being the site of gas explosion in 2005.

Firefighters hosed down the suspected source of the leak while awaiting the arrival of PECO personnel, and units began withdrawing at around 12:30 p.m.
