Cops: Man Took George Washington Painting From New Hope Restaurant

Police are seeking the public’s help.

Police are seeking tips to identify the man who allegedly walked into a popular New Hope Borough eatery and walked out with a painting of a founding father.

The New Hope Borough Police Department reported that the theft happened Wednesday at approximately 1:17 p.m. at The Salt House on East Ferry Street.

According to police, the man entered the restaurant and bar, removed the painting from a wall, and exited the circa-1751 building the artwork.

Police described the suspect as a white male in his late 70s with a heavy build and short stature. He has mid-length gray hair and was last seen wearing a black leather jacket and light-colored shoes.

Witnesses told police the man fled the scene in a white Toyota SUV. The vehicle bore New Jersey registration plates, which authorities believe may begin with the characters “C95.”

Borough investigators are asked anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity or the whereabouts of the painting to contact cops at 215-862-3033. Tips can also be submitted through CrimeWatch.
