Veterans Day: What’s it all about?

Veterans Day is observed every year on Nov. 11, and honors those who’ve served in the United States Armed Forces.

In other countries around the world, Nov. 11 is also reserved for Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which commemorate the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The U.S. version was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

In case you were wondering, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all military veterans, while Memorial Day is dedicated to the memory of men and women who gave their lives in the service of our country.

In terms of holiday closings, post offices won’t deliver mail, and offices will be shut. Other major shippers like UPS and FedEx will be operating normally.

The nation’s biggest banks will be closed, but individual branches of some corporate chains will be open. Schools and public libraries are not required to close.

And most stores and restaurants will be open, with many offering one-day deals for members of the military.

For those of our readers who’ve served, thank you!
