Winter Lecture: Environmental Issues In The Context Of Community
The term environment can mean different things to various segments of a community. While city dwellers see their
environment as the concrete and street trees that inhabit their immediate surroundings, others envision a river and
forest. To engage community members around environmental issues or priorities, a better understanding of what
constitutes environment and what is an environmental concern is necessary. To further improve their environmental
programming, The Nature Nurture Center in Easton, PA conducted a community needs assessment to better understand
what matters most to community residents in the local environment. Details of this process and the lessons learned will
be discussed. Presented by Kathryn Semmens, the Science Director of the Nurture Nature Center. She holds a Ph.D. in
Earth and Environmental Sciences from Lehigh University, a master’s degree from the University of Delaware and a BS in
Environmental Studies from Ursinus College. Kathryn worked as a postdoctoral associate at the USDA’s Agricultural
Research Service and the Pew Environment Group in Washington, D.C.
