A woman who was in the custody of the Bucks County Department of Corrections died over the weekend.
“The 37-year-old female was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Doylestown Hospital where she was receiving medical care,” county officials said in a statement.
Bucks County Coroner Patti Campi identified the woman as Ashley Gushue, of Bristol Township.
The coroner stated that both the cause and manner of death are currently pending further investigation.
County officials confirmed Gushue’s death in a statement but did not provide specific details on the nature of her medical treatment.
Gushue had been in county custody since March 3, according to spokesperson Eric Nagy.
Court records show Gushue originally arrested by Newtown Township police in 2023 on misdemeanor drug-related charges and enrolled in a diversionary program for first-time offenders. However, she was later accused of violating the terms of that program.
Additionally, Gushue pleaded guilty last year to a harassment charge in Bristol Township. She had been sentenced to probation for that case, which authorities alleged she also violated, per court papers.
According to statistics on inmate deaths for Bucks County, there were no deaths in 2025, one natural death in 2024, three natural and one accidental in 2023, two natural and three suicides in 2022, one suicide in 2021, and one suicide in 2020.
