A Philadelphia man was arrested last Tuesday after allegedly striking a Bucks County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a disturbance at the Bucks County Justice Center.

The day in Courtroom 560 where Waheed Berry, 30, of Philadelphia, attended a court hearing before Bucks County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Raymond McHugh around 11:05 a.m., according to information filed by the Bucks County Detectives.

Berry was advised to leave the courtroom after causing a disruption, detectives said.

Deputies escorted him from the justice center and told him he was not permitted to reenter the building, authorities said.

Deputies believed Berry was under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, law enforcement officials said.

Approximately 20 minutes later, at 11:25 a.m., Berry allegedly returned to the Justice Center lobby.

A deputy approached him and again advised him to exit, authorities said.

Berry reportedly paused to make a phone call and refused to leave as the deputy attempted to escort him out. A sheriff’s office corporal arrived to assist and repeated the instruction to exit.

Berry proceeded to the vestibule and he continued using his phone. When the deputy threatened arrest if he did not leave, Berry allegedly replied, “Then f—— arrest me” before swinging his hand and phone, striking the deputy in the face approximately three times, according to detectives.

The deputy and corporal then physically subdued Berry and took him to the ground, authorities said.

The deputy drew a Taser and instructed Berry to stop resisting and put his hands behind his back. Berry then complied and was handcuffed, authorities said.

Deputies transported Berry to the holding cell in the basement of the Justice Center and he allegedly continued to be uncooperative. He kicking the glass on the cell door while lying on the floor, authorities said.

Bucks County Detectives were called to investigate the incident.

A detective noted that the deputy had redness and swelling on his left temple area and right cheek, along with a cut or scrape on his right cheek and a small cut under his right nostril. The deputy also sustained a small cut on his left hand, authorities said.

Emergency medical staff checked the deputy at the scene before he was transported to Doylestown Hospital for further evaluation.

Berry was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and single counts of defiant trespassing, disorderly conduct, public drunkenness, and simple assault. He was arraigned and held on 10 percent of $250,000 bail.
