Reenactors in Continental Army uniforms will gather Christmas Day to commemorate a pivotal turning point in the American Revolution during the 73rd annual reenactment of George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River.

The event will be held at Washington Crossing Historic Park to honor the night of Dec. 25, 1776, when Gen. George Washington led his troops across the icy river to launch the “Ten Crucial Days” campaign.

The festivities are scheduled to take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Dec. 25, with the river crossing itself slated for 1 p.m.

Park officials suggest that visitors arrive at the Upper Makefield Township section of the park by 11:30 a.m. to secure viewing spots for the riverbank ceremonies.

Admission to the Christmas Day reenactment is free.

Organizers said the event is funded by proceeds from the “First Crossing” event held earlier in December and donations from private contributors.

While the crossing is the highlight of the afternoon, park officials noted that the launch is contingent on the conditions of the Delaware River. If water or weather conditions are deemed unsafe for the boats, the park will instead host land-based living history demonstrations, speeches, and ceremonies.

The Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge will be closed to vehicles from late morning until early afternoon on Christmas. The bridge’s pedestrian walkway is expected to remain open to those on foot.

More information regarding the event can be found by visiting the website for the Friends of Washington Crossing Park.
