The decision marks the end of a several-year-long partnership.

The Giant Company has ended its five-year partnership with the Flashfood app, a program that allowed shoppers to purchase discounted groceries nearing their “best before” dates.

The discontinuation, which took effect in late June, was attributed to low customer usage, according to officials from The Giant Company.

Giant Food Store officials told abc27 in Harrisburg that a recent review showed low engagement with the app and that led to the decision.

The grocery chain stated it would continue to offer savings through its existing “yellow-tag markdown program” for items nearing their best-buy dates. Additionally, Giant reiterated its commitment to donating surplus food to community partners.

Flashfood, which allows users to buy produce, meat, and bakery items at reduced prices, said in a statement they were disappointed over the split.

“While we’re incredibly disappointed in The Giant Company’s decision and valued their partnership, particularly during this time of high cost pressures on Americans, we are rapidly scaling our footprint in North America and remain committed to our mission to feed families, not landfills,” Flashfood said in a statement to the TV station.

Flashfood plans to expand its presence across the East Coast, but specific details were not provided, Axios recently reported.

The termination of the partnership with Giant follows similar decisions by other grocery chains to end their collaborations with Flashfood, according to various reports.

Flashfood has partnerships with other grocery chains, including Tops, Loblaws, IGA, meiher, NoFrills, and Piggly Wiggly.

Flashfood’s 2024 impact report stated that its app has diverted more than 32 million pounds of food from landfills and saved customers over $80 million.

The company’s mission is “to feed families, not landfills.”
