Hunterdon County residents will see a slight decrease in their county tax rate following the approval of the Fiscal Year 2025 budget by the county commissioners last month.

The $122.5 million budget reduces the county tax rate from .309 to .306 per $100 of assessed property value, while maintaining the county government’s debt-free status.

According to the budget, revenues increased by nearly 2 percent and spending rose just over 1 percent.

The budget covers the commissioners’ operations and county services, as well as appropriating funds to elected offices, including the prosecutor’s office and sheriff’s office.

Commissioner Deputy Director Shaun C. Van Doren, a budget co-liaison, noted record investments in capital improvements, leveraging state grants for road resurfacing and upgrades to county bridges and culverts. He added that the budget continues investments in public health and safety through state grants and county matching funds for expanded clinical services for seniors, veterans, and the underinsured.

Van Doren noted the budget includes a $1 million grant fund for municipal park refurbishment and a $500,000 grant program to support local police departments.

Additionally, the budget provides funding to eliminate a proposed 3.5 percent tuition increase for Hunterdon County students attending Hunterdon County Polytech from the county’s regional high schools.

Commissioner Director John E. Lanza said the county is focused on a commitment to fiscal discipline and taxpayers.

“The FY25 budget is once again a demonstration of this Board’s ongoing commitment to fiscal discipline and putting our taxpayers first – it is something in which we can all take pride. Putting our taxpayers first and enacting policies that help to keep Hunterdon County the safest, healthiest, and best county in which to live, not only in New Jersey, but in the nation, is of the utmost importance to each of us on this Board,” Lanza said.
