William Allen Brewer.

Solebury Township Police and New Jersey law enforcement officials confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the body of William Allen Brewer, 51, of Solebury Township, was recovered from the Delaware and Raritan Canal at the southern end of Stockton, N.J., at around 1 p.m.

New Jersey State Police are reported to be at the scene, and Solebury Township Police and the Hunterdon County Medical Examiner are said to be involved in the investigation. Based on preliminary information, officials said they believe that Brewer’s death was accidental.

Solebury Township Police Department had earlier requested help from the public in locating Brewer, who had been reported missing on Monday. He was last heard from by family during the evening of May 25. Solebury Police had said that an individual earlier Tuesday reported seeing Brewer along the canal towpath in Stockton near Brookville Hollow Road at around 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Brewer was well known in the New Hope area, having lived at 19 W. Mechanic St. alongside the canal for many years. A carpenter by trade, he had an amiable personality and an easy smile, and will be missed.
