“The New Hope Borough Police Department was dispatched to 170 S. Main St. to investigate a report of a barge that had either broken or was cut free from its mooring. The barge was secured to a tree with a chain and padlock. The barge had just been put in place in preparation for the June 3, 2016, fireworks display.

“The barge is now aground just past the New Hope Wing Dam and sinking. The barge is owned by Tony Demusz. The barge had been placed in its mooring on Saturday, May 28. The barge was moored behind the house, and not visible from the street.

“It was last seen intact at 12 am behind the house on May 28. The barge drifted through the opening in the wing dam, and became lodged on the rocks about 20 feet below the dam. The barge has taken on water, and the owner is attempting to recover it from the river. Investigation showed that the chain was intact, but the lock was missing. Footprints were observed in the mud coming out of the river.

“The Delaware River Towns Chamber of Commerce has offered $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the individual or individuals responsible for cutting the locks to the fireworks barge on Sunday May 30, 2016, leading to its sinking in the river. The barge was private property, and we take this criminal act seriously. Anyone with information is urged to call the New Hope Police at (215) 862 3033 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or use the dispatch number at (215) 345-7400 for all other hours and days.

“Fireworks will go on as planned this Friday, June 3, 2016, at 9:30 p.m. for its normal 10-minute show.”

  • I’m willing to wager this is the same jerk face who was responsible the last time the barge ended up down the river.

  • As to the barge being vandalized, you may want to take a hard look at the people screaming about protecting the eagles nests. Even tho the ASICS and the other proper environmental protection agencies have been contacted and worked with, some of the hard line protectionist won’t listen to reason and have reacted with PETA like zeal. Just a thought.
