Garage fire on West Mechanic Street brought under control

A carport at 11 W. Mechanic St. exploded into flames at around 9 a.m. Monday morning but the fire was quickly subdued by fast-acting neighbors, police personnel and a rapid response from Engine 46.

The fire began on the roof of a carport attached to the blue and pink structure which houses retail shops Surrender and God Save the Qweens. The flames were fortunately contained to the garage by the quick actions of Police Officer Steven Gruber and New Hope-Eagle Fire Co. Deputy Chief Frank Cosner, Jr. who arrived on scene early, as did Police Chief Mike Cummings who manned a nearby hose, and Mechanic Street Mugs owner Joel Roberts who ran toward the flames with a common household fire extinguisher. Engine 46 and Lambertville firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the conflagration.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was not immediately known, although a window above the carport roof may point to a hastily tossed lit cigarette.
