Water begins flowing toward New Hope section of Delaware Canal

An electric pump in the Delaware River at Center Bridge began sending water Monday into the parched Delaware Canal and southward toward New Hope. With the canal wall repaired near West Mechanic Street and the Ferry Street Bridge near completion, the filling of the canal is being billed by organizers as more of a test run then the beginning of a new era for the canal.

Certainly, the rising waters may reveal a leak or other challenge that will have to be addressed. And there’s much work to be done before the sound of mule barge rides echo through the towpath once again.

But nothing can diminish the fact that New Hope today started taking back its canal.

Congratulations are due to New Hope for Our Canal and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for helping make it all happen.
